Top 10 SEO Copywriting & Search Engine Optimization Tips

Yesterday I wrote about the top 10 on-page specific SEO tips. Today, we’ll focus in on the top 10 content specific recommendations.

Friendly Disclaimer** These tips are aimed at copywriters and beginners who are looking to get started  optimizing their website and should be taken as a guide only. You’ll quickly find in this industry everyone has a slightly different idea about what works best and a lot of search engine optimization is simply trial and error.

Internal linking:

Internal links should be used to cross-link related content – this builds the strength of webpage’s within the search engines, encourages your website’s ‘crawlability’ and provides a better user navigational experience.
11) Internal links should be added within your website copy when talking about a specific topic where there is further information available on another webpage from the site.
12) As a rule, don’t overuse internal links within copy. When you do choose to interlink make sure your links contain keywords where possible. In other words, try to use “Keyword phrase” instead of “click here” or “learn more” for example.

Keyword usage on-page/body content:

Website copy should be written specifically for web users with primary consideration of the online call-to-action.
14) Aim to use your primary keywords in the first paragraph of text in addition to your title and heading tags.
15) Use primary keywords and variations of keywords/secondary terms within main body of text. Aim for 3-5 instances of each as a general rule and, again, be sure to keep the content in-context.
16) Use keywords within internal links to webpage content to cross-link to related pages using keyword-rich anchor text.
17) Use bold and italics to highlight important keywords or targeted keyword phrases. This isn’t a major search engine ranking factor but can help to emphasize certain keywords within your content – but make sure to overdo it.
18) Use keyword descriptive ALT tags, ideally optimized towards the same set of targeted on-page keywords.

Keyword density (defined)

19) I heard someone recommend recently that the ideal keyword density should be the same as the alcohol strength of your favorite beer. If your keyword density is 0% then yes – you’ve got a keyword density problem but modern SEO is really more about how keywords are formatted/presented on the page. If you have the perfect keyword density, say 5.5% (Carlsberg), but all of these terms are listed within the footer and navigation – with no mention in the page copy, title tags headings etc – then the page is unlikely to be performing at an optimum level.

Image Optimization

20) Try to upload images to a webpage with optimized file names. For example “/images/keyword-phrase.jpg” – using a hyphen to separate keywords so that these are read by the search engines as spaces.
21) Bonus: Make use of the image alt attribute and optimize relevant images for your targeted keywords. As well as helping to optimize your page for the search engines this may help to attract searches via Google Images which has the potential to drive significant amount of traffic.

This sums up my top 20 SEO tips. Please feel free to leave your own SEO and copywriting tips in the comments!
